Earth Day + Consumerism
It’s Earth Day!!!!! Today, I actually decided to go out and take a walk with a few friends around a park near my house. I don’t know, I guess I wanted to take some time to fully explore the beauty of nature. We as a society are often so busy that we forget to stop and smell the roses for a minute. It’s funny how we make up so many excuses about how we never have time to explore our surroundings. I learned that there is always time to look around but we just choose to say otherwise because it is the easier thing to do.
When I was walking around, I asked random people these two questions… What makes earth so special? Why is it important? These were some of the answers I received… “Earth is the only planet to have life” “it provides energy for us to breath, to survive” “It’s home”. I wonder if these people think about earth while shopping for things they don’t even need. I get it, it could be hard but if we really cared about earth, we wouldn’t be facing all these consumerism problems we are dealing with now.
A healthy Earth allows us to live longer and have a healthier life. Taking care of earth is everyone’s responsibility. I found an article from National Geographic that explains how the growth of consumerism affects earth and it was definitely a worth
reading article.
